About the Symposium

The applied mathematics and fluid mechanics communities suffered a great loss on Sunday, August 17th, 2008 when Philip G. Saffman, the Theodore von Kármán Professor of Applied Mathematics and Aeronautics, Emeritus, at Caltech, passed away after a long illness. Faculty and staff of both the Aeronautics and Applied and Computational Mathematics Departments organized this workshop to honor the lifetime of groundbreaking contributions that Professor Saffman made to these fields.

Many, many thanks to our speakers and attendees for making this such a memorable event!

About
Professor Saffman

Philip G. Saffman
Philip G. Saffman, the Theodore von Kármán Professor of Applied Mathematics and Aeronautics, Emeritus, at the California Institute of Technology, studied vortex instability and the dynamics of arrays of vortices. In particular, he looked into the phenomenon of viscous fingering, which became known as the "Saffman-Taylor Instability." This occurs when a low-viscosity fluid is injected into a higher-viscosity fluid.
