Overview | How to Apply | Graduate Admissions Office
Caltech
provides a distinctive research environment where exceptional graduate students, postdocs, and faculty members work together in a uniquely
interactive and close-knit community. On our small and beautiful
Pasadena campus, academics from related (and unrelated!) disciplines
interact with unusual frequency and vigor, creating a striking level
of intellectual energy. First-time visitors to campus could do worse
than to begin at the Red Door Cafe, where researchers of every kind
sit engrossed in conversation, reading, playing chess, or just enjoying
the coffee.
Current
ACM research projects involve collaborations with colleagues in
Aeronautics, Biology,
Bioengineering, Computer
Science, Control and Dynamical
Systems, Electrical Engineering,
Materials Science,
and Mechanical Engineering as well as the new Information Science and Technology initiative.
New students participate in a balanced curriculum of analytical
and computational courses to provide a strong foundation for further
research in a chosen application field with faculty from throughout
the Institute.

Caltech
and ACM maintain an international reputation both because of and
in spite of their small size. In virtually every department on campus,
there are far fewer faculty members than are found in similar departments
at institutions of comparable research stature. Caltech's size leads
to very different research opportunities and a much higher degree
of interaction both amongst the faculty and between faculty and
students. In
ACM, there are currently 7 full-time faculty, 4 emeritus faculty,
and roughly 30 graduate students and postdocs. Only 6-8 graduate
students are admitted each year, and all of these receive multi-year
fellowships, teaching assistantships, or research assistantships
that cover full tuition and an annual stipend. Outstanding students
with a strong mathematical background and an undergraduate degree
in any field of science or engineering are encouraged to apply for
a graduate position in the Caltech Applied & Computational Mathematics
department.
